5 out of 5 stars Well worth a read...   September 7, 2010

What an eye opener into one of the most closed country's in the world. Well researched and one of those non-fictional reads that will have you hooked.

4 out of 5 stars Mind-blowing   September 6, 2010

Unbelievable contents. Its hard to believe this kind of
treatment is continuing in the 21st century.

5 out of 5 stars North Korea revealed   September 6, 2010

excellent descriptions of life for ordinary people in the ultra-secretive, utterly state-controlled North Korea. The book lived up to the excellent review I read in the Times. One can only admire the painstaking interviewing. I've recommended it to all the serious readers I know. Once again thanks to Amazon for a reduced price and delivery to my home.

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly interesting   September 2, 2010

Oral history, or personal stories, is for me by far the best way to learn about a country's history. North Korea's history is tragic and fascinating. Because it's been so cut off for so many years we've not seen as much in the news about it as we should have done.

The people interviewed for the book paints a picture of a dictatorship and what it's like to live within it when it crumbles, at what point it changes and at what point they started questioning the propaganda.

The stories are woven together well with a good balance of emotion and facts. A fascinating book that I truly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars A truly frightening account of life in North Korea   August 30, 2010
Mr. C. J. L. Skelton (Kent, England)
The winner of the BBC Samuel Johnson Prize 2010, Barbara Demick's should be required reading in our schools so devastating is the message about totalitarian governments that exist solely for their own purposes and to hell with their population.
The book is a severe indictment of the country's government where people are forced to live without lights (no electricity) and no food, scavenging for tree bark and grass as there is nothing else to eat.
It is a fascinating read - well written - about real people and their lives.
Highly commended and extremely sad.
