Excellent sporting & anecdotal read September 6, 2010 james.oldcorn 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased this book as a present for my brother but found myself engrossed in it before passing it on.Some wonderful Lancashire humour & great anecdotal stories from a down to earth cricketing legend.
The car never started August 31, 2010 Mike_206 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
A disappointing read from a normally entertaining personality. This book is just a series of dull and unfulfilling anecdotes about Bumble's well known cricketing friends, all of whom have written their own well publicised autobiographies and a serious dollop of sycophancy regarding his Sky Sports employers. There are many dubious pub related tales revolving around his anonymous drinking partners none of whom seem remotely interesting or colourful but actually rather sad and possibly just alcoholic. You end the book feeling as if you neither know David Lloyd any better nor his world views beyond some rather obvious opinions on player discipline and the fact that he likes a beer... a lot of beer. Hardly a yarn, more of a yawn.
Infectious fun August 31, 2010 Ragman Took this on holiday to Spain and discovered I was not the only one chuckling along to it at the side of the hotel pool. In fact, myself and another guy were laughing out loud with such regularity that we were asked to loan our copies out! I took this and Frankie Boyle's book with me and they are equally funny. Bumble is like a mix of James Dean and Frank Spencer.
I love cricket and particularly like the fact that Bumble discusses what he thinks of the recreational game. It was interesting and surprising how modern his views are. And I loved the chapter about his Lancashire captaincy debut - only he could start with a game in Monchengladbach.
But this book is so accessible that you don't have to be in love with the sport. Pete, the other poolside reader, was a football man who became aware of Bumble through Sky Sports rather than watching cricket all his life.
All in all a great purchase.
Could do better August 29, 2010 Mr Donald B Anderson (Weyhill, Hants, GB) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Bumble is great value for money a a live cricket pundit. But his book has less sparkle than his beloved Accrington. Long sections on the structure of cricket and its laws need a good editor's attention.
present August 28, 2010 Mrs. B. Butterfield I brought this book for my husband as we both like bumble,
my husband read it in a couple of days he said it was not quite
what he expected the book to be but he still said it is a very
intresting book and he really injoyed it. which makes it a good buy.
