Dreadful September 8, 2010 Julie Hawkins (London, E14) I have read quite a few books by Harlan Coben so I was really looking forward to reading this one but I was so disappointed. What a complete waste of money. I too had taken it for a holiday read but although I usually persevere with books even I couldn't do it with this one. I left it behind at the holiday flat and I hope that if someone picks this up they will forgive me for inflicted such a dreadful book on them. He should be ashamed to put his name to it.
A real page turner but could have been updated September 7, 2010 David J. Hillman (Beds, England) It does say at the front of the book that this was Harlen Coben's first novel and that he hasn't changed it - that was his only mistake and that it why I haven't given it 5 stars. The plot, the twists and turns and the sheer entertainment value is certainly a sign of things to come. It's not as well rounded in terms of characterisation or plot as some of his later novels but just as entertaining for that. Great fun and keeps you guessing right to the end as all great thrillers should do.
Leave it on the shelf September 6, 2010 J. Potkins If his name wasn't on the cover I would never have known this was his book. OK, I am sure that most of us strive to improve in our chosen profession, but to release this first effort now seems lazy and cynical, not to mention a huge risk. He'd better hope people new to his books don't make this their first choice, they may never go back to read the good stuff. I lost interest in this book fairly early, it's rare for me not to finish a book, but I decided that life's too short to waste anymore time on this one!
Awful September 2, 2010 maxpax Having read most of coben's book was really looking forward to this one, however it has to be one of the most cheesiest and predictable books i have ever read. In fact i would go so far as to say it was a joke - Come on Harlan you can do better than this!!
For completists only August 31, 2010 Alex McEwan 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
To be fair to the author, in the foreword to this book he does warn that if it is the first book of his you have picked up you should put it back and choose another. I have read all of his books, and in the main have enjoyed them. He did go through a spell of writing about people who had gone missing in some way or other and 'came back from the dead', where only the relationship to the main character seemed to vary from book to book. So with a title of 'Play Dead' I should have heeded his warning and put it back. I didn't and suffered for my foolhardiness. The book really is awful, almost verging into the area of soap opera, e.g. Dallas or Dynasty, in the improbability of the basic premise and the plot twists. Not just as contemptuous of the audience as months of story written of as a dream, or characters going into spaceships, but not far off.
Coben has always had a habit of seemingly drawing the story to an end with around 100 pages, (or an hour of audio book time), still to go, so you know that there is still at least one major twist to go, and this is no exception, but in this case it was just so bad as to be laughable
There are early studies of characters, or should that be caracitures? who went on to appear in the author's Myron Bolitar series, but that is about all to interest fans.
I was warned and didn't heed, maybe the subject of this review will help others make a better choice.
