3 out of 5 stars I'm trying hard to like this book   September 5, 2010
A. M. Long (Leeds, UK)
I bought this book based on reviews, and I just don't get the hype attached. It feels like a half measure. The recipes are OK, but involve quite a number of ingredients which are genuinely hard to come by on a day to day basis, so for me, as i don't live close to a specialist store, it takes a lot of planning for.

There are some good ideas for varied salads and the Garlic Tart, and the 'surprise' tart are good, but for me it's one of those books that I'll probably use a couple of times, but it will never become a favourite.

This is by far the best vegetarian cookery book I have come across. The recipes are consistently good. I would definitely highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars The vegetarian cookbook I've wanted for so long   August 29, 2010

I've only owned this for two months but it's become the mainstay of my cooking. I cooked from Ottolenghi's Guardian column quite regularly anyway but this is certainly worth owning; it's very nicely produced. It proves just how far it is possible to transcend the bland, penitential fare that the word 'vegetarian' still sometimes evokes for people. I find his recipes relatively idiot-proof but always distinctive and delicious; of course, some are better than others but I haven't had any failures yet. My only complaints would be that he often fails to suggest possible substitutes for his more hard to come by ingredients, and there are too few Asian recipes --- Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisines are obviously his strong suits but a vegetarian cookbook ought to make more extensive use of Asian possibilities.

5 out of 5 stars The best cookbook - ever   August 20, 2010

The recipe's in this book are simply amazing. They look a little complicated at first sight, but don't let that put you off as the results are just the most delicious meals you will ever eat. I have found that most ingredients are available from asian/middle eastern shops (I live in Birmingham so these are plentiful for me) but many of them can be replaced with similar things.
Give it a go - you won't be disappointed. Especially the black pepper tofu - tofu need never be boring and tasteless again!
