Product Description
Anne Boleyn, Henry VIII's second wife, was imprisoned in the Tower of London on 2 May 1536, and tried and found guilty of high treason on 15 May. Her supposed crimes included adultery with five men, one her own brother, and plotting the King's death. She was executed on 19 May 1536. This title tells the story of Anne's fall.

5 out of 5 stars History brought to life   August 31, 2010
Bluebell (UK)
This book is a lively and interesting account of the rise and fall of Anne Boleyn combining historical scholarship with plausible invention that makes for a pacy narrative. It's a roller-coaster of a story much of which is very familiar, but I found the input of the author as an historian added to my enjoyment. I think she gives an unbiased account of the evidence for and against Anne being either a wicked fornicator or a woman set-up by her enemies who might have included Henry VIIIth eager to be rid of her so he could marry Jane Seymore. The story reminds one again and again what a dangerous place the Tudor Court could be for those jockeying for favours and position and the extraordinary power of the Monarch over his courtiers. The outrageous intrigues and disloyalty even within the high-born families stands at variance with their outwardly professed piety. I had earlier listened to an audio version of Hilary Mantel's excellent book Wolf Hall (unabridged audio book) which pairs very effectively with this book as it overlaps the same time period but tells the story from the different perspective of Thomas Cromwell: he, who at first, supported Anne but later became her enemy and instigator or collaborator in her downfall. Alison Weir has also written a historical novel centred on the life of Elizabeth the First The Lady Elizabeth which also dove-tails nicely with the this book about her mother, Anne Boleyn

Alison Weir has never written a bad book and this is no exception- amazing research and attention to detail.Highly recommended.

Interesting, well-written and detailed. My only objection, as always with Weir, is her referencing. She gives only the book, not the page, and so it's impossible to verify her information or find the full quotes. Sometimes she just writes LP - Letters and Papers has over twenty volumes!

5 out of 5 stars The real story of Anne Boleyn?   August 1, 2010

A fascinating investigation into the last days of Anne Boleyn and the case drummed up against her, probably by Cromwell. An academic but cliff hanging book which explains a lot that has been glossed over in in novels about her downfall. It's academic but accessible and I couldn't put it down.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant & well-researched. Very highly recommended.   July 29, 2010

This was purchased as a gift for my son who is fascinated by the latter years of Anne Boleyn's life. He reported that he thought it was the best historical novel about the subject that he had ever read & found Alison Weir's research second-to-none. In fact he couldn't fault it in any way. Very highly recommended. The Lady in the Tower: The Fall of Anne Boleyn
