The best photography book of the many many I have read September 8, 2010 J. Jones (London) Having decided to get serious about photography about a year ago, I have found this book to be a true eye opener. Michael's clear pragmatic text with lots of pictures illustrating the concepts, really helped me understand how to take better pictures. What's more it showed me how to really appreciate photography and see why a great photo is great. Once you have got to grips with the functions of your camera, this book will really kick your hobby to a new level. It's very well structured with modules building on one another in a clear and logical way. At the same time it encourages creativity and exploration of ideas. I have read many photography books over the last few months and this is by far the best, both technically and in the humble style of the author who is not at all overbearing nor ego centric (as some authors are in this field, you know who you are)... As I read this book, I became increasingly excited at the insight and understanding it gave me of the art of photography. In fact writing this review has got me fired up to go and take some better photo's right now!
It is like an artist trying to explain art to an engineer!! September 3, 2010 Dr Koh Well this is a good book.
The author is trying to explain art in a quantified manner which i tot was excellent. his explainations was good.
Some very good photos in this book. even if you dont read the book, flipping through you can get some good inspiration!
Guaranteed to teach a photographer something new at any level August 20, 2010 A. J. S. Tait Really delivers. Too many photography books either focus too much on the photos or get very technical on the details. This finds a really good balance. Introduces theory from Art or Photography Composition lectures but the theory is worn lightly; linked to excellent examples and with a clean, crisp presentation design.
Good examples are
- showing how and why the eye will look at a particular photo
- examples of photos taken before and after the perfect moment and why they don't work as well
Good summary of all that has been explained at the back in ~30 easy themes to look out for. A book that really does make a difference. Not just a coffee table book
Serious stuff July 20, 2010 n8trm This is not for the casual snapper, but for someone looking for the theoretical analysis of images this is the tops. Very well illustrated and carefully worded items give the person looking to improve a deeper understanding of what lies behind the 'feeling' of a good image - inspirational!
A good read July 12, 2010 Nishaanx (London, England) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Being relatively new to photography, I purchased this book to help me get better shots quickly. Although there are a few really good points and chapters, I found the book in general quite difficult to read and understand. The terminology and explaination is very technical and for someone just starting out its rather impossible to make sense of it all.
Although it's a good read I wouldn't recommend this to anyone starting off and would probably leave this book for those more advanced photographers who care about Fibonacci composition.
