Product Description
The son of a black African father and a white American mother, Obama was only two years old when his father walked out on the family. Many years later, Obama receives a phone call from Nairobi: his father is dead. This sudden news inspires an emotional odyssey for Obama, determined to learn the truth of his father's life.

Amazon.co.uk Review
One of the many refreshing things about Barack Obama is his self-deprecating sense of humour. Responding to the unrealistic expectations for his presidency, Obama said 'I've been sent by my father from the planet Krypton to save the Earth.' Unfortunately, the irony of this self-comparison to Superman was probably lost on many of his dedicated followers, who clearly believe that – once in office – he can exercise a few super powers and rid the world of all its thronging ills, economic and otherwise. But as Dreams from My Father proves, Obama is no fool, and knows the cold realities that face him, even though this intelligently written book is filled with optimism and hope. Which is understandable enough; after all, what else could Obama offer?

The politicians who can actually write may be counted on one hand, but on the evidence here, Barack is among their number (he reminds us that William Faulkner said the past is never dead and buried – it isn’t even past; can you imagine Barack's predecessor in the Oval Office quoting Faulkner – unless the allusion was written for him by one of his speechwriters?). In fact the book -- Obama’s remarkable life story – was, of course, written before his destiny was irrevocably changed by his success in the US presidential election, and it is a striking account of a young man coming to terms with the problem of his identity and issues of belonging in a racially divided country (a racial division that Obama – by the very example of his success – may do a considerable amount towards healing). The son of a black African father and a white American mother, Obama details the dramatic journey that constituted his parents’ life before his own trip to Kenya to confront the sobering realties of his father’s life. It is a book about coming to terms with the past – and comparisons with writers such as Proust in such areas are not as ridiculous as they would be if almost any other politician were involved.

Dreams from My Father gives real hope that ‘dumbing down’ – in order to appeal to the lowest common denominator – will not be the hallmark of the Obama presidency. --Barry Forshaw

3 out of 5 stars autobiography   June 20, 2010
A. Farrelly (London)
This book has an interesting account of Barak's antecedents but gives little insight as to his political policy. Background rather than aims & ideals

4 out of 5 stars Keep on missing my tube stop whilst reading this   June 10, 2010
Hitgirl (London, UK)
I was afraid that this would be a dry read but it's not at all, it's very absorbing.
I'm mixed race and I don't feel the same way as Obama about race and class, but it did make me think about the importance of your own personal story. The cultural/racial narrative you wrap around your life is not the definition of you, but it does make you feel supported.

4 out of 5 stars Honesty of a Politician   June 7, 2010
Discerning Reader
This is on the whole a very interesting book. When it was first published it was not such a big seller as it is now, as clearly people are now really curious about the background of the first black president of the USA.

In many ways President Obama's background is very appropriate to the head if the USA, which has often been called the melting-pot, into which all different cultures and nationalities come together; the result is the unique American. Perhaps more than any of the ordinary American's the President's background is very varied, both culturally and geographically. This must make it possible for him to relate to the ne3eds, the desires and aspirations of all Americans.

This is a good read because you get the feeling that he is being very honest about his life, his earlier work whereby he began to formulate his idea of change and political philosophy he adopted.

There is some imbalance in the book. There is very little about Michelle; but this may be deliberate. There is perhaphs too much detail about his relatives in Kenya. After sometime the reader gets lost in all the different names and connections. It was obviously important to the President, but perhaps a little boring for the reader.

I wanted to know a lot more about the development of his thoughts on race. When he took his white friends to a party, and politely they left early- what did he make of that? In many ways we can see he is telling us what he is thinking and experiencing, but I think we would have liked a little more about the conclusions he reached about race.

The book helps us to reflect upon and understand how the world is changing.

5 out of 5 stars As usual, an execellent man! Wonderful read.   May 19, 2010

There is something about a man who sits at a table, ready to listen to both sides of very opposing views and then find a centre to govern from. This is what makes Obama great, if not greater than the 43 predecessors.

The sad thing is that in the backward rusty western empire called the USA, such a man is not valued because the majority of the population still cling on to the outdated ideas of 17th century men whose thinking cannot stick up to today's world.

History will look at Obama and the motivation that fuels his ideas. I have no doubt it will be beautiful. A man of our time.

4 out of 5 stars Amazing Life Story   April 8, 2010
K. Burton (Cotswolds)
I had no idea Barack Obama had even written a book until this title was selected by my reading group! I found it hard to get atarted but then found it utterly compelling and amazing. I am still amazed that a boy from such an unusual background has ended up being the power of a nation. The book is so honest it hurts - every humiliating feeling and incident is so clearly and deeply described - feelings most of us will have had while growing up but have probably chosen to forget. The writing shows an incredible strength of character as well as a very human side to this boy who grew up to be such a powerful man. It has made me see him as a human being and not just The President of another country. Considering his youth it is written with such maturity and depth it is hard to believe he is still a young man now!
Very thought provoking and whatever you may think of his country or even his leadership you will be drawn to him as a person for writing this oh so honest account of a difficult passage from boyhood to manhood.
I am so glad I have read it.
